Net Wrap vs. Twine: What the Research Shows

Over 5 to 12 months of outdoor storage, University of Wisconsin research found twine-wrapped bales lost about 11 percent of their weight while net-wrapped bales lost only 7 percent, about 4 percent more feed saved. Wrapping also cut harvest losses by roughly 1 percent.

The biggest savings is time: net wrap needs only a couple of turns of the bale versus 15, 20, or even 30 for twine, so you can make about 30 percent more bales per hour on less fuel and less wear.

Silage Film

For the ultimate protection of fermented forage from moisture, insects, and UV, we recommend Sunfilm brand silage film in 20″ and 30″ widths. It wraps bales airtight and holds its seal through the storage season.

  • Reduced storage and operational cost, no need for inside storage
  • Excellent puncture, abrasion, and tear resistance outdoors
  • Treated to resist UV degradation for up to one year
  • Reflective white film reduces heat build-up to protect feed quality (black also available)
  • Excellent cling wraps bales airtight for the full storage duration
  • Prevents attack by bugs, mold, and harmful bacteria

Hay Tarps

A quality hay tarp protects your stack from the elements, where you can otherwise lose up to 30 percent of a bale over time. Our tarps are made from tightly woven polyethylene (7.5 oz, 16 mils thick) with a Cam-lock Buckle Assembly and an all-in-one strapping system that makes covering a stack fast and simple.

Sizes in stock

  • 14′ x 54′
  • 25′ x 54′
  • Round bale tarps: 30′ x 48′

How the Strapping Works

Unfold the tarp on top of the stack, throw the straps over the side, and fasten them to the twine of the bottom bale using the attached ‘J’ hooks. A simple pull on the Cam-Buckle secures it.

Why It Matters

Moisture gets into bales three ways: rainfall, snowmelt, and humidity. The top of the stack absorbs rain and snowmelt; the bottom wicks moisture from the ground. A tarp keeps the top of your stack dry.
